Waskaganish was originally established as trading post known as Fort Charles then became Fort Rupert then formerly know as Rupert`s House,  then as we know today Waskaganish means Little House in the Cree Language
Waskaganish was founded in 1668 and was the first Hudson’s Bay Company trading post established in the James Bay area. Waskaganish is one of the oldest settlements in Canada. and It is located at the mouth of the Rupert River.
Waskaganish is a place of beauty, pictures que scenery, great fishing and birding; a place where the historic Rupert River flows.  Many stories abound of its past, present and future while living the Cree way in a rapidly changing world.
Waskaganish is a growing, vibrant community with an on-reserve population of approximately 2500 people.  Cree is the dominant language spoken, although the younger generations are becoming fluent in English and French as well.
